2010 Soccer Season Archived News

FRSL 2010 Carnival This Saturday

Just a reminder that this week Saturday is the final day of season 2010 and to mark the occasion the FRSL is holding the traditional all-day soccer carnival at Thomas Oval in Medina, commencing at 9am.

Last year's carnival was a great success and we're hoping this season's carnival will be even bigger and better. There'll be plenty of food, drinks, stalls, fund-raising activities, children's (and some adult's) amusements and of cause plenty of soccer all throughout the day. So be sure you spread the word to your family, friends, colleagues and whoever else might be interested in coming along so we can all contribute to making this day a success!

Now available for download is a full colour brochure (3.79MB PDF) containing an overview of the important information relating to the Carnival. You can also download a separate copy of the Carnival Schedule that is included within the brochure.

Please note: to ensure the day runs smoothly and on time, players are requested to be at their respective game pitch at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled kick-off time of the game.

More details regarding the carnival will be posted here as they come to hand. So stay tuned...

Carnival Cup & Masters Cup Rules

In addition to the standard FIFA Laws of the Game, the following is a set of customary rules that will be utilised for Carnival Cup and Masters Cup matches on Carnival day.

a) Substitutions and Cards

  • There will be no limit to substitutions.
  • A substitution can take place at every break of play which is either a free kick, goal kick or corner kick (not a throw in)
  • A player receiving a yellow card must leave the field for 5 min, and if a sub is available that player can substitute.
  • A player receiving a red card (or two yellow cards) in the game, must sit out the rest of the game. This player can be substituted.

Note: Cards received during these games will not add to the tally of the season.

b) Deciding the Winner of a Match

  • In the Carnival Cup group stage matches (i.e. not the Carnival Cup Final), if scores are level at the end of standard time, the game will be declared a draw.
  • In the Carnival Cup Final and Masters Cup, if scores are level at the end of standard time, the game will go straight to a penalty shoot-out (no extra time).

c) Deciding the Winner of the Group in Carnival Cup

The winner of each group will be determined in the following format:

  1. The team that has the most points (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss)
  2. If still undecided, then the team with the greatest goal difference
  3. If still undecided, then the team with the greatest percentage
  4. If still undecided then the team with the highest goals for
  5. If still undecided then the team with the lowest goals against
  6. If still undecided then the team will be picked from a hat.

The two teams playing the Carnival Cup Final will be announced during the announcements session at 12:30pm.

Additional Rules For Finals Weeks

The following outlines a set of rules that will be used in addition to the standard FIFA Laws of the Game for particular types of matches being played during the finals weeks.

Additional Elimination, Preliminary, and Semi-Final Rules

a) Silver Goal

The 'Silver Goal' rule will apply to all Preliminary, Semi and Elimination finals matches where scores are level at the end of standard time. Silver Goal means if a team is leading after the first half of extra time, that team wins the game and the game is complete.

If there is no winner after the first half of extra-time, a second half is played. If there is still no winner at this point, the winner of the match will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

b) Length of Extra-Time Halves

The lengths of the extra-time halves will be as follows:

  • Junior Boys, Junior Girls and Senior Boys: 7 minutes
  • Senior Women: 10 minutes
  • Senior Men: 15 minutes

Additional Scratch Match Rules

a) Substitutions and Cards

  • There will be no limit to substitutions.
  • A substitution can take place at every break of play which is either a free kick, goal kick or corner kick (not a throw in)
  • A player receiving a yellow card must leave the field for 5 min, and if a sub is available that player can substitute.
  • A player receiving a red card (or two yellow cards) in the game, must sit out the rest of the game. This player can be substituted.
  • Cards received during scratch matches will not add to the tally of the season (or cause suspension in following games).

Take Note of Today!

For those of you who were at soccer today, you would no doubt have witnessed firsthand the consequences of the lack of numbers for umpiring and linesman volunteers in 2010.

Whilst this is not a request for you to volunteer to umpire and/or line in the remainder of this year, we hope that you will remember the issues that we had today (missing umpires and linesman) when we ask for umpire and linesman volunteers next year.

It's the aim of the FRSL to ensure each game day runs smoothly and efficiently, but if we do not have enough support from volunteers willing to officiate games, it makes achieving this aim very difficult!

Frank Janssen
Umpire Coordinator, FRSL

Thomas Oval Field Layout Changed

From this week Saturday, the pitch layout for the FRSL game day is changed.

In the interest of player safety, we have decided to retire the large pitch next to the kiosk building (formerly pitch 5), as the surface was consistently hard and the general condition of that field was deteriorating rapidly. All games that were played on the retired pitch will now be played on the existing pitch located at the very back left corner of Thomas Oval. The name of that pitch will change from Pitch 3 to Pitch 5. A new Pitch 3 will be created and marked at the front left corner of Thomas Oval.

To be sure you understand the changes, please refer to the updated map and layout diagram of Thomas Oval for season 2010.

Mid-Season Newsletter Released

We've just passed the mid-way point of the season so to mark the occasion, the FRSL Executive Committee has produced a mid-season review in the form of a newsletter.

Micro and Mini Umpiring Rosters Available

The rosters for umpiring the Micro and Mini division games have now been added to the schedule pages for the divisions of Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Senior Boys.

The following are the umpiring assignments:

  • Junior Girls:
    • Umpire Micro/Mini 1:45pm
    • Umpire Micro/Mini 2:45pm
  • Junior Boys:
    • Umpire Micro/Mini 1:45pm

    • Umpire Mini 12:45pm
    • Umpire Micro 3:45pm

If you are rostered to umpire a game listed as 'Umpire Micro/Mini', then Nathan Terpstra, the Micro and Mini Coordinator, will contact you prior to the game to advise you of which division you will actually be umpiring.

If you can't umpire, try to organise a swap with someone else or email Nathan. If you don't end up performing your umpiring duties, then your team will lose points. Coaches should also make sure they are aware of when players from their team are umpiring to help ensure that duties are performed and all runs smoothly.

Any questions or problems regarding Micro or Mini umpiring should be directed to Nathan Terpstra via the Soccer Committee email address.

Senior Men - Tell Us Your Team Captains (Byford and Darling Downs)

Byford and Darling Downs Senior Mens division teams have still not officially informed the FRSL of their chosen team captain. It is important you email the FRSL the name and contact details of your captain immediately.

The nominated captain will automatically become part of the FRSL Players Committee and will be the team's representative at an Executive level in the FRSL. You will be required to attend a couple of Player Committee meetings throughout the season where you will have the opportunity to give feedback, asks questions or voice concerns on behalf of your team.

Coaches Required - Please Volunteer

The Senior Boys Possums team and the Junior Girls Skyblues team are still without coaches. So if you would like to volunteer as coach, please contact the FRSL as soon as possible. Remember, you don't have to be an expert to coach, you just need to have basic soccer knowledge and be able to support your team (or share your duties) each week.

Linesman Urgently Required

With a 10% increase in player numbers again this year, we need even more linesman this year to support the extra games taking place. The FRSL is in urgent need of more Senior division linesman - we really need your help! So if you can offer your services (senior men's/womens players included) or would like more information in what's involved, please contact Game Day Coordinator Frank Janssen as soon as possible.

Senior Men Early Game Time Change

To provide sufficient time for the change over of match officials between the Senior Men's division games, the early game (first game) time slot has been brought forward and will now commence at 1:15pm each week. Please help spread the word about this change.

Mini And Micro Start Time Change

To assist with scheduling of game officials for Mini and Micro division, the FRSL has changed the start time of the Mini and Micro division time slots. The first game for these divisions will now commence at 12:45pm. Please check the website for the latest schedule.

Lining And Umpiring Duties

To assist the FRSL with the duties of umpiring and lining, the following divisions have been assigned to umpire or line the given games each week:

  • Junior Boys:
    • Umpire Mini and Micros 1:45pm (2 boys required)
    • Umpire Mini and Micros 2:45pm (2 boys required)
  • Senior Boys:
    • Line Junior Boys 12:30pm - Pitch 1 (2 boys required)
    • Line Junior Boys 12:30pm - Pitch 3 (2 boys required)
    • Umpire Mini and Micros 12:45pm (2 boys required)
    • Umpire Micro 3:45pm (1 boy required)
  • Senior Womens:
    • Line Junior Girls 12:30pm (2 women required)
    • Line Junior Girls 1:45pm (2 women required)
  • Senior Mens:
    • Line Senior Boys 1:45pm (4 men required)
    • Line Senior Womens 3:10pm (4 men required)

It is the primary responsibility of the captain, but also the team as a whole, to ensure that you provide the necessary umpires or linesman for when your team (or a team member) is assigned umpiring or lining duties. If you fail to provide the required personnel your team may be at risk of losing points.

Rosters for umpiring and lining duties are included in each division's schedule on the FRSL website. You should use this as your first point of reference for the most current umpiring and lining roster. If you or your team are unable to undertake your required umpiring or lining duties for a week, you must email the FRSL no later than the Wednesday prior to the Saturday the duties are scheduled.

Pre-Kick Off Information

FRSL season 2010 kick-off is just days away and now is the time to make sure you are prepared for Saturday.

To ensure you are up to date with the latest information, please take the time to read the following important pre-kick off notices addressed to particular divisions, parents and game officials.

Schedules and teams on website
Divisions: All (plus parents)

This website has now been updated to include team lists and playing schedules. Be sure to check when and where you are playing this week. This year the schedule is even tighter, so it is crucial that all teams ensure that all players are at their game field at least 10 minutes prior to the commencement time of the game. In the first week of the season, we request that you arrive 30 minutes early for your game so we can distribute team shirts and organise other items.

Remember, for the most up to date schedules and other information, you should always use the FRSL website as your first source of information. Sometimes we can't always email you updates but they are usually placed on the website. At the bottom of most pages on the website is a 'last updated' date, so that will give you a good idea of when a page was last updated.

So be sure to regularly check this page for updates.

Be 30 minutes early this week
Divisions: All (plus parents)

So the FRSL can distribute shirts and organise other necessary items, please ensure you (and the rest of your team) are at your game field 30 minutes early this first week. Thank you for your cooperation.

The pitch layout and some of the pitch names have changed this year, so if you are unsure of where to go, please look for one of the Executive Committee members dressed in a navy polo track suit with the FRSL logo on the front. If time permits, prior to Saturday we will try to upload a graphic to the website showing the pitch layout.

Coaches update
Divisions: All (plus parents)

This year we have had an excellent response with regards to volunteers for coaching the lower divisions - so thank you to all those that volunteered. The coaches for the respective teams have now been added to the team lists on the website.

Currently, only 2 Senior Boys teams and 1 Junior Girls division team do not have coaches. So if you can assist them in coaching, please contact the FRSL as soon as possible. Remember, you don't have to be an expert to coach, you just need to have basic soccer knowledge and be able to support your team (or share your duties) each week.

Umpires and linesman urgently required
Divisions: Senior Boys, Senior Mens, Senior Womens (plus parents and past umpires)

With a 10% increase in player numbers again this year, we need even more umpires and linesman this year to support the extra games taking place. These shirts will be distributed to the children at the start of the first scheduled game. The shirts will be given to the children to keep throughout the season, and they are expected to wear their shirt to their game each week.

Tell us your team captains
Divisions: Senior Mens, Senior Womens

The FRSL is requesting that all teams in the Senior Mens and Senior Womens divisions inform the FRSL of their chosen team captain. It is important you email the FRSL the name and contact details of your captain by this Thursday night (April 15). If your team has not yet nominated a captain, then please send us the details of one person in the team who will act as a temporary team contact.

Please note, for the Senior Men's Mundijong-Rockingham team, the captain should be nominated from one church and a vice captain from the other. The contact details of both these members must be supplied to the FRSL.

Senior Mens dress code update
Divisions: Senior Mens

In previous years, the FRSL has implemented a dress code for the Senior Men that included black shorts and black socks. However, after meeting with the referees, the Soccer Committee resolved to change this dress code for 2010 and introduce particular coloured socks (only) for the different teams in the Senior Men's division. The colour of the socks for each team will be dependent on the color of the team shirt. The FRSL has recently decided to supply each Senior Men player with an appropriately coloured pair of socks. These will be distributed to you prior to your team's first game.

The main reason for introducing this change is that the referees acknowledged that it was often difficult to differentiate between the two teams on the field, because the colours of the clothing were identical from the waist down.

Please note: contrary to an earlier notice, the colour of the shorts worn by Senior Men will NOT change and will remain black.

Thomas Oval Location
Divisions: All (plus parents)

For those new to the FRSL this year, our playing fields are situated at Thomas Oval, off Tucker Street in the suburb of Medina.

You can find Thomas Oval on Google Maps.

Please note, there is some construction work going on at the end of Rowson Place (what was the Kwinana soccer club's reserved field), so you may not be able to park up the back of Thomas Oval (near the logs next to what was the main senior mens field) like last year. Main parking is still available in the parking lots and other areas along Tucker Street.

Important Pre-season Information

Things are well underway to kick off the 2010 season of Free Reformed Soccer on Saturday April 17. Registration is now closed and much work has been going on behind the scenes to finalise teams, the playing schedule, referees, coaches and other items. The teams and playing rosters are now available to view on this website. Be sure to check what team you are playing in and when you are scheduled to play on the first day so you are at your game on time.

Please remember to check this website for the latest updates and information. On a side note, we are still very keen to hear from anyone willing to coach, referee, or line this year - please contact us ASAP if you are interested.

Below are a number of important announcements for the various divisions. Please take the time to read them.

Senior Women (and Junior Girls)

The FRSL is very pleased with the significantly increased interest in the Senior Womens division this year. When registration closed, we were about 7 players shy of being able to field 4 Senior Women's division teams. As we were unable to get enough additional senior women to make up the required numbers for 4 teams, the FRSL decided to promote the grade 11 girls into the Senior Women's division to make up those numbers. The grade 11 girls will not incur any additional charge for being promoted to the Junior Girls division.

Senior Men

In previous years, the FRSL has implemented a dress code for the Senior Men that included black shorts and black socks. However, after meeting with the referees, the Soccer Committee resolved to change this dress code and introduce particular coloured socks for the different teams in the Senior Men's division. The colour of the socks for each team will be dependent on the color of the team shirt.

The main reason for introducing this change is that the referees acknowledged that it was often difficult to differentiate between the two teams on the field, because the colours of the clothing were identical from the waist down.

Please Note: The FRSL has decided to supply each Senior Men player with an appropriately coloured pair of socks.

Mini League and Junior Boys

In order to balance the number of teams in the Junior Boys and Senior Boys divisions, the FRSL has promoted the Mini division boys of grade 6 (or quivalent date of birth for grade 6) into the Junior Boys division. Therefore, Junior Boys now essentially include boys from grades 6 – 8, and Senior Boys includes boys from grades 9 – 11.

Mini and Micro

To alleviate the need for parents to undertake the somewhat difficult task of purchasing various coloured shirts for their children, this year the FRSL is providing shirts for all the children in the Mini and Micro divisions. These shirts will be distributed to the children at the start of the first scheduled game. The shirts will be given to the children to keep throughout the season, and they are expected to wear their shirt to their game each week.

Season 2010 Online Registration: March 1 to March 20

PLEASE NOTE: Registration for season 2010 has now closed

During the off-season, the FRSL purchased an online sports management system to help facilitate management of the league in an effort to automate much of the time consuming manual processes of past seasons.

Consequently, season 2010 registration will be performed primarily online with the ability to register and make payment using the online registration system.

Registration will be open from March 1 until midnight of March 20, 2010.

No further registrations will be accepted after the March 20 closing date - so if you have friends or family that are currently away on holidays or unaware of the registration period, you should contact them ASAP to ensure they do not miss out on registering.

The registration process is pretty self-explanatory, but should you experience any difficulties or have any questions, please contact Tim Everts via the Executive Committee email address or for urgent assistance via telephone on . Our aim is to make your registration process as smooth as possible, but please bare in mind that this registration system is making its debut for the FRSL so if there are any problems, please be patient while we do our best to rectify them.

The following are the costs for registration in each division:

Division School Years# Cost
Micro PP - 3 $30*
Mini 4 - 6 $30*
Junior Boys 7 - 8 $45*
Junior Girls 7 - 11 $45*
Senior Boys 9 - 11 $45*
Senior Men 12 - ~ $110
Senior Women 12 - ~ $110

# note that the school years are only provided as a guide since the online registration system determines the correct division for the player based on their date of birth.

* A player in this division can be registered within a family registration. A family registration allows up to 4 family members to be registered for a fixed cost of $110.

The online registration will give you the choice of paying for your registration by credit card, electronic funds transfer (EFT) or a cheque.

The first games for all divisions will be scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 2010.
